Kisumu County nutritionists recently received practical training in preparing therapeutic feeds during a Continuous Medical Education (CME) session at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
The training focused on producing nutritious porridge enriched with maize, soya beans, and sugar, fortified with essential minerals and vitamins. This formulation serves as a vital supplement for various vulnerable populations, including lactating and pregnant mothers, children over two years, and adults with illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
The session emphasized the importance of calculating fluid and caloric allowances for patients to ensure their nutritional needs are met adequately. Participants explored various therapeutic diets, including lactose-free options for those with intolerances and blended diets suitable for individuals with difficulty chewing or swallowing.
The CME covered a wide range of topics, including nutrient modifications for specific conditions like diabetes and kidney disease, texture-modified diets, and managing food allergies and intolerances.
Mrs. Rael Mwando, the County Nutrition Coordinator, stressed the significance of proper documentation and reporting in improving the quality of nutrition services. She encouraged participants to utilize key tools like Vitamin A Monitoring Charts, Nutrition Service Registers, and the S11 Tools for effective commodities control.
Soy Afric, a partner organization, showcased their range of locally available fortified blended foods, highlighting their potential for inclusion in therapeutic diets.
This hands-on training aimed to enhance the skills of healthcare professionals in managing patients with specific dietary requirements, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
