Radiology & Imaging Department
The Radiology and Imaging Department at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital plays a central role in supporting accurate diagnosis and guiding effective treatment for patients across the region. As one of the hospital’s key diagnostic units, the department ensures that clinicians are equipped with precise imaging results necessary for timely and informed medical decisions.
The department is staffed by a dedicated team of four radiologists and twelve radiographers, who contribute to service delivery while gaining hands-on experience. This multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to ensure that patients receive high-quality imaging services in a timely and professional manner. Their expertise spans a wide range of diagnostic needs, from routine imaging to more complex investigations.
Standing out in the region, the department offers a comprehensive range of services at relatively affordable rates while utilizing modern, state-of-the-art equipment. These services include general digital X-ray imaging, mammography for early breast cancer screening, orthopantomography (OPG) for detailed dental and jaw assessment, and ultrasound for real-time imaging of internal organs. The department also provides specialized diagnostic services such as electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG), as well as advanced imaging modalities including Computed Tomography (CT) scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). These advanced technologies are critical in the diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of complex conditions such as malignant tumors, neurological disorders, and internal injuries.
The unit is fully equipped with a general digital X-ray machine, ultrasound machine, a 128-slice CT scanner capable of producing high-resolution 3D images within a short time, an OPG machine, mammography equipment, and MRI technology. The availability of this equipment enhances the department’s capacity to provide accurate and efficient diagnostic services, reducing the need for patients to seek such services elsewhere. Faster scan times and improved image quality have also contributed to better patient outcomes, particularly in emergency and critical care situations.
Access to radiology and imaging services has further been strengthened through the Social Health Authority (SHA), which plays a key role in reducing the financial burden on patients. Under SHA, a wide range of imaging services are covered once pre-authorization has been granted, allowing patients to access essential diagnostic procedures without incurring prohibitive out-of-pocket costs. This is particularly beneficial for patients requiring advanced imaging such as CT scans and MRI, which are often more expensive. However, ultrasound and X-ray services under SHA are primarily limited to inpatients, ensuring that admitted patients receive prompt and necessary diagnostic support as part of their overall treatment plan. This structured coverage model helps streamline service delivery while prioritizing critical cases within the hospital setting.
Located within the hospital, the Radiology and Imaging Department operates on a structured schedule designed to meet both routine and emergency needs. Key services are available 24 hours a day to cater to urgent cases, particularly in accident and emergency situations where immediate imaging is required. The department works closely with other clinical units, ensuring that imaging services are integrated seamlessly into patient care pathways.
Imaging plays a crucial role at critical points in patient management, from initial diagnosis to treatment monitoring and follow-up care. Whether supporting surgeons in pre-operative planning, assisting physicians in diagnosing internal conditions, or helping monitor disease progression, the department remains an indispensable pillar in the hospital’s service delivery. Through a combination of skilled personnel, advanced technology, and improved healthcare financing mechanisms, the Radiology and Imaging Department continues to enhance patient care and outcomes within the region.
