Our Achievements
- The department has been able to develop into one of the best departments in Kenya because of the model that has been put in place. The model is well integrated into that the staff can be able to attend to children because of the presence of the pediatric room, treatment room for electrotherapy, the exercise room which is well equipped with the most recent machines which are practical and efficient, qualified staff and specialties in certain fields such as orthopedic manual therapists and specialists in pediatrics and community-based rehabilitation and community health.
- The department has been able to reach the peripherals- the department has received referrals from different hospitals and even countries to get specialized treatment and this can be linked to the best services that the department offers.
- The department has been involved in collaborations with other partners from non-governmental organizations, associations of people with disabilities in Kenya who help in terms of supplying assisting devices like wheelchairs, crunches and assessments in terms of rehabilitation. The department has also collaborated with Cure international in Kijabe who periodically come to do reviews or assessments in terms of orthopedic and neurological cases and other disorders which may need surgery and their orthopedic surgeons work with the physios to offer surgery to patients at subsidized fees.
- The department is looking forward to having a hydrotherapy pool that uses buoyance in terms of treatment and it can be able to help in terms of rehabilitating so many disorders like training balance and strengthening the muscles.
- The department has initiated a program of lifestyle changes and this is because of the fact that most disorders come in as a result of non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes and even cancers so keeping fit helps to get rid of such kinds of disorders. Members are encouraged to enroll to reduce their weight in order to have the correct BMI at a subsidized fee.
- The department collaborates with training institutions since students come for attachment and the staff offers mentorship to students to help them become qualified physios who are ready to face the world.
- The department is engaged in research which basically entails seeking answers to different questions and this helps the department to grow.
Challenges faced by the Departement
- Financial constraints- the department lacks adequate finances which they can use to repair the broken machinery since they are expensive.
- Inadequate staff- since the department is expanding there is the need to employ more staff in order to be able to attend to the patients in different units for instance the ICU patients need a 24hour service and there are other units such as the oncology unit which is coming up and also the renal unit and so there is a need to attach officers to all those units.
