                                                                                                                                                  A significant boost to healthcare infrastructure at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) was marked by the official commissioning of a state-of-the-art kitchen. H.E. Mr. Vsevolod Tkachenko, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Kenya, presided over the event, highlighting the enduring partnership between Kenya and Russia and the crucial role of international collaboration in strengthening healthcare systems.

The modern kitchen, a key component of a broader Ksh 129 million initiative supported by the Russian Government through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to enhance health infrastructure across three Kenyan counties. As part of this initiative, JOOTRH also received a consignment of 89,500 vital medical supplies from Russia.

Ambassador Tkachenko emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations, recalling that JOOTRH itself was originally established with support from the former USSR in 1969. He lauded the newly commissioned kitchen as a powerful symbol of continued cooperation, made possible through the joint efforts of the Russian Federation and UNDP Kenya.

The new facility is poised to revolutionize patient care at JOOTRH. Its spacious and modern design incorporates specialized areas, including a main kitchen, cold storage, a dedicated diet kitchen, and an in-house bakery capable of providing fresh bread daily for both patients and staff.

“Food is the first medicine,” affirmed Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, CEO of JOOTRH. “This modern kitchen will significantly support the nutritional recovery of our patients, ultimately contributing to improved overall clinical outcomes.”

The transition from a traditional firewood-powered kitchen to one utilizing clean energy represents a substantial environmental and health advancement. This upgrade minimizes the health risks associated with fossil fuel use and creates a safer, more hygienic working environment for kitchen staff. Furthermore, the facility is designed to cater to a wide range of dietary needs, including the preparation of specialized meals for patients with specific medical conditions.

UNDP has pledged ongoing support for the kitchen’s solarization and a reliable clean water supply, further enhancing its sustainability.

Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili expressed his profound gratitude to the Russian Government for their steadfast partnership, describing the commissioning as “a powerful symbol of international cooperation in transforming healthcare delivery.”

Ambassador Tkachenko, accompanied by Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili, Chief Officer for Medical Services and Public Health Dr. Lusi Ojwang, and UNDP Kenya representative Mrs. Madelena Monoja, was warmly welcomed by JOOTRH CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe and the hospital’s management team.

As JOOTRH advances towards becoming a national referral facility, this significant development underscores the hospital’s growing capacity and unwavering commitment to providing excellent clinical care.

This investment in nutritional care also addresses a wider economic challenge. Findings from the Cost of Hunger in Africa (COHA) study reveal that undernutrition places a significant economic burden on countries like Kenya, resulting in billions of shillings in losses annually and reduced national productivity. By prioritizing nutritious meals for patients, JOOTRH is actively contributing to improved health outcomes and long-term socio-economic development within the region.
