In a compassionate move to uplift cancer patients undergoing treatment, Mayfair Holdings, in collaboration with the Anchor of Hope Cancer Support Group, has joined hands to support the feeding program at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) oncology clinic.
The initiative specifically targets patients receiving chemotherapy, many of whom face dire financial constraints and struggle to afford basic nutrition.
Recognizing that “food is the first medicine,” the partners are determined to enhance the nutritional status of patients, which is critical for better response to treatment and improved quality of life. It is documented that malnourished cancer patients tend to respond poorly to chemotherapy, making such nutritional support a therapeutic necessity.
As part of the collaboration, Mayfair Holdings is introducing a new high-protein nutritional product branded as “Cricket.” This innovative product, primarily made from cricket flour, can be used to prepare porridge and other meals, serving as a rich alternative source of protein for cancer patients. While the product will undergo further testing before being rolled out to patients, it is expected to contribute significantly to their dietary needs.
In the longer term, the team envisions creating a pre-chemotherapy nutritional pack, allowing patients to consume a well-balanced meal before their sessions.
JOOTRH has pledged its commitment to kick-start and sustain this initiative, a crucial part in cancer care. The hospital is also looking forward to deepening its partnerships with Mayfair Holdings and the Anchor of Hope Cancer Support Group to expand the program beyond chemotherapy patients.
Looking ahead, JOOTRH is preparing to launch a palliative care unit and scale up its follow-up care services for cancer patients. Once completed, the Bunker, which will house radiotherapy services, is expected to greatly enhance the hospital’s capacity for cancer intervention and treatment.
“Being diagnosed with cancer should not be a death sentence,” remarked Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, the CEO of JOOTRH. “Early detection and nutritional intervention are vital in cancer management.
