In a significant step towards improved healthcare access, the Interim Committee for Kosawo Health Center held a public participation meeting to discuss the facility’s upcoming operationalization in February 2024. The center will serve as an extension of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), bringing comprehensive primary healthcare services to the densely populated Kondele Ward.
During the meeting, the community unanimously agreed to name the facility “Kosawo JOOTRH Annex,” reflecting the shared benefits and strengthening the partnership between JOOTRH and the community. This naming also signifies enhanced access to funding from the Social Health Authority (SHA), which will support maternal and child health, and other vital primary healthcare services.
The Kosawo JOOTRH Annex is expected to serve 11 villages in Kondele Ward, which has historically faced limited access to quality healthcare despite its high population density. Sub-county Administrator Ibrahim Mboya hailed the facility as “the best gift given to this community.”
Jacob Odhiambo, Chairperson of the Interim Committee, provided an overview of universal healthcare coverage and the role of SHA in funding healthcare services. He explained the tiered system, with primary healthcare services available at levels 2 and 3 hospitals, while accident and emergency care and treatment for chronic illnesses are provided at higher levels of care. This structured approach ensures accessible and affordable healthcare for all residents.
Ward MCA Joachim Oketch highlighted the significant advantages of the Annex, including access to specialized expertise from JOOTRH, modern medical equipment, and seamless referrals for advanced care. He commended JOOTRH CEO for this initiative, emphasizing the importance of aligning healthcare services with the community’s needs and income levels.
Dominic Ademba, NGAO, urged the community to enroll in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) to fully benefit from the comprehensive services offered by the Annex.
The community, which has eagerly awaited this development for 14 years, expressed overwhelming support for the Kosawo JOOTRH Annex. Residents praised the partnership between JOOTRH and the County Government of Kisumu for making healthcare more accessible and affordable. The proximity of the facility and improved queue management were cited as key advantages.
This successful collaboration between JOOTRH and the community is poised to set a new standard for healthcare delivery not only in Kisumu County but also across the nation.
