By Calvin Mutinda, Lilian Ambrose and Kevin Arubansi The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) is taking significant strides towards providing exceptional healthcare for mothers and babies. This commitment was recently exemplified by two key initiatives: the adoption of VAYU Global Health’s innovative “breathing for babies” technology and a strategic shift towards advanced surgical practices.
Dr. Maureen Muchela, the hospital’s pediatrician, welcomed a team of medical professionals to a training session on the revolutionary bubbling Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (bCPAP) system. Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, JOOTRH’s CEO, further underscored the importance of this advancement.
“We are incredibly grateful to VAYU Global Health for their generous donation of 10 bCPAP devices and a year’s supply of consumables,” Dr. Lesiyampe expressed. “This technology represents a significant step forward in improving healthcare outcomes for newborns in our region.”
The CEO emphasized JOOTRH’s dedication to cutting-edge solutions. “In today’s world of rapid technological advancements, we cannot afford to compromise the well-being of mothers and babies due to outdated practices,” he declared. “We are committed to providing the highest quality care possible.”
Looking to the future, Dr. Lesiyampe announced a major shift in surgical practices at JOOTRH. “Starting next year, we will be phasing out traditional open surgeries, transitioning instead to minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures. This will revolutionize the way we deliver patient care,” he revealed.
Further bolstering JOOTRH’s commitment to excellence, the CEO announced the expansion of the Neuro Ward. “We are thrilled to unveil the expansion of our Neuro Ward, which will now boast a 900-bed capacity, making it the third-largest in the country,” he stated with pride. Additionally, he announced the construction of a new elevator system connecting the Casualty Department directly to the top floor of the administrative block, enhancing overall hospital efficiency and accessibility.
The bCPAP training session served as a powerful symbol of JOOTRH’s dedication to patient well-being. By embracing innovative technologies like the bCPAP device, the hospital demonstrates its unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and saving lives.
Dr. Lesiyampe also addressed the hospital’s human resource policy, emphasizing the importance of staff appreciation and accountability. “We are implementing a comprehensive policy that recognizes outstanding performance while addressing any underperformance issues,” he declared.
In closing, the CEO reiterated that JOOTRH’s success hinges on its clinical achievements. “Ultimately, the quality of care we provide and the lives we save will be the true measure of our success,” he stated. “We all have a collective responsibility to ensure that JOOTRH delivers the best possible clinical outcomes in this region.”
Expressing gratitude for the team’s dedication and commitment to ongoing learning, Dr. Lesiyampe announced the purchase of an additional staff bus for benchmarking and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Following the CEO’s inspiring address, Mr. Kennedy Opondo, the VAYU Global Health engineer, led the attendees through a comprehensive training session on the bCPAP system. The team actively participated in the session, engaging in hands-on demonstrations and asking insightful questions.
The resounding success of the bCPAP training session underscores JOOTRH’s commitment to embracing innovation and empowering its staff to deliver exceptional patient care. As the hospital continues to evolve and expand its capabilities, the community can look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of these advancements on the lives of mothers and baby
