Margaret Awoke beams today, celebrating a life-changing surgery for her son. Killian, once burdened by a cleft palate, now smiles brightly thanks to the skilled hands of the surgical team at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH). This success involved a collaborative effort between JOOTRH, the Kenya Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (KSPRAS), Smile Train, and The University of Nairobi. Aoko, Killian’s mother, still resides in ward 9 of JOOTRH, her heart overflowing with gratitude. For over a year, she watched with concern as Killian struggled with his condition. The past year and four months were a blur of worry, but today, hope shines brightly. Aoko vividly recalls the day Killian’s diagnosis hit her. Initial shock and fear were overwhelming. However, whispers of JOOTRH’s renowned cleft lip and palate surgeries reached her ears. Yet, nothing prepared her for the genuine care and expertise she encountered. JOOTRH became a beacon of hope for Killian’s future smile.Surgery day arrived, a whirlwind of emotions. Aoko entrusted her precious son to the capable surgeons, her heart filled with a mix of anxiety and anticipation. Hours later, when she saw Killian’s transformed face, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks. The change was remarkable. The dedicated team had meticulously corrected his cleft palate, paving the way for a normal, happy life. Post-surgery, Aoko diligently managed Killian’s pain. The hospital provided pain relievers, and she meticulously followed instructions. Relief washed over her as Killian responded positively, his discomfort subsiding. The sight of his pain easing brought immense peace. However, the road to recovery wasn’t without bumps. Killian struggled with medication, often vomiting after each dose. Feeding became a daunting task as he’d vomit anything he ate. Aoko’s worry resurfaced, but the hospital staff offered reassurance. They explained this was a common side effect and would subside. They encouraged Aoko to continue with the medication, and promised close monitoring.Aoko’s experience at JOOTRH instilled profound respect and admiration for the staff. Their expertise and dedication not only restored her son’s smile but also her hope. Now, they eagerly awaited discharge. Aoko carries a message for other parents facing similar challenges: “Hold onto your faith,” she says. “The journey may be difficult, but trust the JOOTRH medical team. They are exceptional, and everything will be okay. Look at Killian – his smile is a testament to the miracles they perform. Hold onto hope, and never give up.”
