JOOTRH Unveils Transformative Projects to Bring Quality Healthcare Closer to the Community.
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has taken a bold step toward expanding access to quality healthcare with the launch of the JOOTRH Mashinani Initiative, a community-focused outreach program designed to take essential services directly to underserved populations across Kisumu and beyond.
The initiative, unveiled during a high-level visit graced by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, will allow JOOTRH clinicians to reach patients at their doorsteps using the newly acquired staff bus customized for field medical operations. Through this outreach, communities will now benefit from cancer screening, maternal and child health services, reproductive health, general outpatient care, emergency response, hygiene education, and treatment for common illnesses, eliminating distance as a barrier to service delivery.
The team will also facilitate SHA registration during the outreaches, ensuring community members are enrolled into the national health cover. This will make it easier for them to access treatment, including referrals, specialized follow-up care, and continued management at JOOTRH for patients requiring advanced services.
The Mashinani program aligns with the JOOTRH Strategy 2024–2029, where community engagement is a central pillar. By decentralizing services, the hospital aims to detect diseases earlier, reduce preventable deaths, and strengthen trust between healthcare workers and the communities they serve.
While commending the hospital, Dr. Oluga noted that such people-centered approaches reposition the health system to be more responsive, accessible, and equitable.
During the visit, the PS also launched key milestone projects including the Afya KE Health Management Information System, the renovated palliative care unit, a new access ramp linking Wards 3A and 3B, and the formal operationalization of both wards to expand inpatient capacity.
In addition to these milestones, JOOTRH has invested in long-term sustainability by enhancing rainwater harvesting systems and expanding solar energy use within the facility. These interventions, have significantly reduced operational costs while ensuring consistent water supply and reliable power for critical services.
