Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has long been a beacon in the fight against sickle cell disease in the region, spearheading initiatives that have transformed patient care and community support. It was within the walls of JOOTRH that ‘Sickle Cell Zero,’ a groundbreaking initiative uniting diverse stakeholders against the disease, was conceived. The hospital also facilitated the formation of warrior support groups that continue to provide invaluable assistance to patients and their families.
In a significant stride forward, JOOTRH recently reopened the Victoria Annex Hospital, now exclusively dedicated to the comprehensive management and treatment of sickle cell disease. The institution’s commitment to this cause was further highlighted by its participation in a monumental event: the launch of Kisumu County’s comprehensive sickle cell care program. Representing JOOTRH at this pivotal occasion was Mr. Clinton Okise, the Senior Director of Finance and Administration.
The launch event, a major milestone in Kisumu’s healthcare journey, was graced by the Governor of Kisumu, H.E. Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Mama County Dorothy Nyong’o, with Deputy Governor Mathew Owili also in attendance. The evening marked the formalization of a transformative partnership between Kisumu County and YUNIGEN Pharmaceuticals, poised to tackle sickle cell disease head-on.
This crucial collaboration began weeks ago with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kisumu’s Health CECM, Dr. Gregory Ganda, and YUNIGEN in California. With a Concession Agreement now in place, this partnership promises to unlock substantial investments in affordable treatment, foster local drug manufacturing, and significantly improve access to care for those affected by sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease impacts approximately 2 out of every 100 people in Kisumu, with a disproportionate effect on children. Many endure constant pain, frequent hospitalizations, and tragically, shortened lifespans. Through this partnership, the county aims to implement newborn screening in public hospitals, deploy innovative digital health technologies, enhance the accessibility of hydroxyurea, and bolster healthcare systems across the county.
With the reopening of Victoria Annex as a dedicated sickle cell and surgical center, and in collaboration with partners like YUNIGEN and the upcoming Kisumu Comprehensive Cancer and Haematology Centre, the vision is to establish world-class, integrated centers of excellence in care, research, and training.
Furthermore, with the county’s support, YUNIGEN will identify and acquire land, working collaboratively to register it as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This designation is expected to unlock broader economic and industrial opportunities within the region. YUNIGEN also plans to establish a local packaging plant, which will create jobs, facilitate skill transfer, and lay the groundwork for a future pharmaceutical manufacturing zone in Kisumu.
Governor Nyong’o extended his sincere gratitude to the county’s health department, partners, and most importantly, the families whose struggles and resilience have inspired this vital work. This partnership, he emphasized, is just the beginning of better care, local solutions, and a healthier Kisumu.
