After years of closure and anticipation, the Victoria Annex of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has triumphantly reopened its surgical theatre. Today, the first major procedure following the reopening was successfully undertaken, marking a significant medical milestone in women’s health for the region.
The procedure involved a patient suffering from severe uterine fibroids, an achievement that underscores JOOTRH-Victoria Annex’s renewed commitment to pioneering surgical solutions in gynaecological care.
The patient, Lydia Amondi, a vibrant 45-year-old from Kisumu, had endured a year of debilitating and constant symptoms. Recalling her ordeal, Lydia shared, “It was like living a nightmare. The pain was unbearable and constant, and I felt like my body was betraying me.”
Despite attending several clinics, she received unclear responses, unaware that she was suffering from multiple uterine fibroids, which had significantly deteriorated her quality of life and disrupted her daily routine.
Surgery became her only viable option. When a friend referred her to the newly revitalized Victoria Annex, Lydia found a glimmer of hope, drawn by the hospital’s groundbreaking initiative to revitalize specialized services.
The specialized surgical team, led by Dr. Paul Mitei, a renowned gynaecological surgeon, and assisted by Dr. Edwin Oduor, meticulously planned the procedure. They utilized advanced techniques to precisely map the fibroids’ location and size.
“We understood the gravity of this surgery,” Dr. Mitei explained. “Not only were we addressing Lydia’s immediate health concerns, but we were also paving the way for future patients who need specialized, minimally invasive care right here in Kisumu.”
The five-hour procedure, a minimally invasive myomectomy, was a resounding success. The surgical team skillfully removed the fibroids while achieving the critical goal of preserving Lydia’s uterus.
“I was incredibly nervous, but I also had complete faith in Dr. Mitei and his team,” Lydia said, relieved. “Their compassion and expertise put me at ease, and I knew I was in the best possible hands.”
The reopening and successful execution of this complex case firmly establish JOOTRH-Victoria Annex as a center of surgical excellence.
The Ag. CEO of JOOTRH noted that this achievement is in line with the hospital’s mandate as a graded training institution. “we are focused on ensuring our infrastructure supports the highest level of specialized medical procedures. This successful surgery marks a new era for our Victoria Annex,” the CEO stated.
The milestone at Victoria Annex offers hope for women facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with renewed commitment and advanced care, a brighter future for women’s health in the region is within reach.
