Esophagoscopy services at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) are now fully fledged, thanks to the hospital’s recent acquisition of advanced esophagoscopy equipment. This strategic investment marks a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding the surgical capabilities of the region’s premier referral facility.
The newly acquired state-of-the-art technology allows surgeons to use a thin, lighted tube (esophagoscope) inserted through the mouth or nose to examine the inside lining of the esophagus (food pipe) for diagnosing conditions like cancer, reflux, inflammation, or blockages, allowing doctors to take biopsies, remove foreign objects, or treat narrowings (strictures) using a minimally invasive approach.
This advancement is expected to revolutionize patient outcomes at JOOTRH. Minimally invasive procedures typically result in, reduced pain for the patient post-operation, lower risk of infection, faster recovery times, allowing patients to return to their families and work sooner and shorter hospital stays, which helps decongest wards.
In addition to general surgery, the equipment will support a wide range of procedures across various surgical specialties primarily ENT and Urology procedures. This versatility improves diagnostic accuracy and expands the treatment options available to the thousands of patients who rely on the facility.
Speaking while receiving the equipment, Dr. Joshua Okise noted that the acquisition reflects JOOTRH’s ongoing commitment to adopting modern medical technologies to improve service delivery.
“By investing in advanced equipment, the hospital aims to reduce the need for patient referrals to distant facilities and provide timely, specialized care closer to home,” Dr. Okise stated.
With the full operationalization of these services, JOOTRH is positioning itself as a leading center for specialized healthcare in the Lake Region Economic Bloc. By setting new standards in patient-centered, modern medical care, the facility continues to bridge the gap between local healthcare needs and international medical standards.
The introduction of these “fully fledged” services ensures that Kisumu residents and those from neighboring counties no longer need to travel to Nairobi or abroad for advanced esophagoscopy interventions.
