At Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic, a comprehensive range of integrated services is provided to support the health and wellbeing of mothers, children, and families. This unit is central to promoting safe motherhood, ensuring healthy child development, and strengthening preventive healthcare within the community. Key services include antenatal care, which focuses on monitoring pregnancy, identifying potential risks early, and preparing expectant mothers for safe delivery through continuous assessment and health education.
The clinic offers child welfare services such as routine immunization, growth monitoring, and nutrition support to ensure children achieve optimal development. Postnatal services are equally essential, focusing on monitoring the recovery of mothers and the health of newborns after delivery. Family planning services are available to support informed reproductive choices, providing both short-term and long-term contraceptive methods tailored to individual needs.
In addition, the MCH unit provides Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services, which are vital in reducing the risk of HIV transmission during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) services are offered to HIV-negative individuals at risk of infection. The clinic further integrates tuberculosis (TB) screening and linkage to treatment, cervical cancer screening, and mental health assessment, recognizing the importance of holistic care in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Special attention is also given to adolescent mothers through the adolescent clinic, which provides youth-friendly services tailored to meet the unique health needs of young people. These include sexual and reproductive health education, counseling, HIV prevention services, and guidance on responsible health choices. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the adolescent clinic encourages young people to seek care early and make informed decisions about their health and future.
In a continuous effort to strengthen health outcomes, the MCH unit prioritizes health education and community engagement. One such initiative involved organizing a health talk aimed at encouraging new mothers to embrace breastfeeding as a long-term investment in their children’s wellbeing and future. The sessions emphasize the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life. Mothers are guided on how breast milk provides all essential nutrients required by infants while protecting them against infections and boosting immunity.
Complementing these services is the hospital’s dedicated cervical cancer screening unit, commonly known as Room 16. Though modest in appearance, Room 16 serves as a frontline defense against cervical cancer, receiving an average of 50 patients weekly. The unit focuses on early detection and management of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections at the precancerous stage, significantly reducing the risk of progression to invasive cancer. Screening services such as Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), Pap smear tests, and biopsies are offered, alongside immediate treatment options like thermal ablation and Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) where necessary.
Beyond clinical care, Room 16 also provides counseling and emotional support, ensuring that women not only receive treatment but also leave empowered with knowledge about prevention and follow-up care. This integration of preventive services within the broader MCH framework highlights the hospital’s commitment to comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Through a combination of clinical excellence, health education, and specialized services, the MCH unit is committed in improving maternal and child health outcomes
