Ahead of the official launch of its strategy (2024-2029), the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) today convened a stakeholders meeting to outline its vision for the future.
The plan, presented by CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe and Strategy, Quality, Monitoring, and Evaluation head Dr. Neto Obala, positions JOOTRH as a center of excellence in specialized healthcare services.
"Community engagement is a cornerstone of this strategy," emphasized Dr. Lesiyampe. "This marks a significant shift for JOOTRH, prioritizing community integration into all our programs."
Key initiatives under this pillar include:
- Establishing satellite clinics: Kosawo Hospital will focus on primary healthcare in Manyatta, while Holo Hospital will specialize in mental wellness. Victoria Annexe Hospital will be dedicated to sickle cell care.
- Expanding specialized services: The hospital plans to introduce new clinics for dialysis, diabetes, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), cardiovascular care, and radiotherapy.
Other key performance areas outlined in the plan include:
- Leadership and governance: Strengthening leadership and improving governance structures.
- Operational excellence: Enhancing operational efficiency and improving patient flow.
- Financial stability: Diversifying revenue streams and improving financial sustainability.
"JOOTRH has made significant strides in increasing its own-source revenue," said Joachim Oketch, Area MCA and Chairman of the Kisumu County Assembly Budgets and Appropriation Committee. "This is commendable, and the planned digitization of systems will further enhance efficiency and patient experience."
With an annual outpatient load of 250,000, 16,000 admissions, and 4,900 live births, JOOTRH serves a vast catchment area of ten million people across 14 counties in the Lake Region.
Key priorities for the next five years include:
- Establishing a dedicated cancer center.
- Expanding and modernizing the accident and emergency unit.
- Setting up a 50-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- Implementing solar power systems to enhance energy efficiency.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from national and county governments, local leadership, financial institutions, universities, and non-governmental organizations.
