JOOTRH Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week with Enhanced BFHI Initiatives.
By Sherine Atieno and Eileen Dolla. As the world marks World Breastfeeding Week, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) is reinforcing its commitment to the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). The hospital has implemented a range of strategies to promote breastfeeding, including Kangaroo Mother Care, which involves skin-to-skin contact between mother and child immediately after birth. This practice stimulates breast milk production and helps the baby latch on effectively. Dietary counseling, including recommendations for increased fluid intake and nutrient-rich foods, is also provided to support breastfeeding mothers. To raise awareness about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, JOOTRH conducts education programs for expectant and new mothers, covering hygiene, breastfeeding positions, and maternal nutrition. The hospital strictly adheres to the Breast Milk Substitutes Act of 2012, providing infant formula only in exceptional circumstances. A dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including BFHI champions Dr. Muchela Maureen and Betty Okundi, have been trained to implement and disseminate best practices. JOOTRH plans to establish lactation stations for both patients and staff as part of its World Breastfeeding Week activities. The hospital collaborates with Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies (NEST 360) to strengthen its BFHI efforts through mentorship and joint initiatives. This partnership aims to improve maternal and child health outcomes by promoting exclusive breastfeeding. By prioritizing breastfeeding and providing comprehensive support to mothers, JOOTRH is contributing to the overall well-being of infants and young children.   17649|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3503-150x150.jpg,17650|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3507-150x150.jpg,17651|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3512-150x150.jpg,17652|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3513-150x150.jpg,17653|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3514-150x150.jpg,17654|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_3521-150x150.jpg,17655|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5687-150x150.jpg,17656|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5604-150x150.jpg,17657|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5646-150x150.jpg,17658|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5649-150x150.jpg,17659|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5674-150x150.jpg,17660|https://jootrh.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/IMG_5679-150x150.jpg Click here to change this text Click here to change this text
